Mission Skateboard Park increases funding.

Mission Skateboard Park increases funding.

The budget for a new skate park in Mission has grown to $440,000.

Council approved an additional $220,000 in funding doubling the previous budget during last week’s regular meeting.

The move does not come as a surprise as district staff had indicated in previous reports that the initial budget was small and would seriously restrict the size of the project.

Now that New Line Skate Parks, the consultants hired by the district, have completed a geotechnical survey of the proposed site at the Mission Leisure Centre, a more realistic budget has been approved.

The extra funds will come from the Gaming Reserve Fund ($100,000) and the Community Works Gas Tax Reserve Fund ($120,000).

The project will now enter the design phase. It is estimated that the new park will be in the 8,000- to 8,500-square-foot range.

The skate park will be located on the Mission Leisure Centre grounds, adjacent to the old park.
