Revelstoke Search and Rescue airlifted three sledders from Boulder Mountain yesterday.
They reported to the RCMP that one of their sleds had broken down on Christmas Eve and they had intended to spend the night and drive down in daylight.
However, even with a fire and the emergency equipment to spend the night, one man was suffering from hypothermia and therefore they required search and rescue to get them out safely. They activated a spot beacon and their emergency contact alerted the police.
The trio was airlifted to the Boulder Mountain parking lot and did not require medical attention.
Accord to the RCMP news release, Revelstoke Search and Rescue has been activated several times in the past few weeks to deal with similar incidents for either skiers, snow boarders or snowmobilers stranded in the back country.
“Rescue missions such as these, especially in the current weather conditions, light snow, wind, temperatures below zero, place emergency personnel at risk,” the news release said.
The RCMP request that plans be made before accessing the back country, including telling others where you are going and when you expect to return as well as being prepared with your equipment, travelling with groups and being prepared to spend the night.
