Sergeant Darryl Little of the Central Kootenay Regional RCMP has reported late Tuesday afternoon, May 20 that the search for the three youths presumed drowned in Slocan Lake has been suspended by the RCMP at this time.
Sergeant Little, in a press release, indicated that the 10 day search involved the use of the RCMP Dive Team, RCMP Helicopter, Arrow Lakes Search & Rescue, Slocan Lake Fire Dept, Vernon Search & Rescue, Bruce’s Legacy and members of the Slocan area.
“It is unfortunate that the youths could not be located, however, the terrain and depth played a large part in it not being successful,” said Sergeant. “The families of the youths have all been notified of the search’s termination at this time. The RCMP would like to thank everyone who assisted in the search effort.”
Four people, aged 15 to 21 had set out on a May 10 canoe trip in the frigid lake. The canoe reportedly capsized about 150 metres from shore. One of the four, a woman, was found near the canoe. She was was taken to hospital where she later passed away.
The name of the deceased woman is Lily Harmer-Taylor, 19. The search had continued for Jule Wiltshire-Padfield, 15, Hayden Kyle, 21, and Skye Donnet, 18.
