Kelowna’s Glenmore Road, from Dallas Road to High Road, will be reduced to to single lane traffic in each direction during the day for two weeks starting next Monday.
From July 15 to 29, between 7 a.m. to 6 p.m., traffic control personnel will direct vehicles on road as crews resurface the busy thoroughfare.
The city says for public safety and quality control, the traffic control personnel will direct motorists away from the newly treated road portion until it have sufficiently “cured” after repaving.
There may be delays for both northbound and southbound traffic and motorists’ cooperation and patience will be appreciated, says city hall.
The city’s so-called “mill and fill” program extends the life of existing roadways by 20 years and creates a smooth ride by eliminating the effects of tire ruts and asphalt movement that develop over years of use, says the city. This is accomplished by removing approximately 55 millimetres of existing asphalt through a process called cold milling, then refilling it with a suitable depth of new hot mix asphalt.
The 55 millimetres of milled asphalt that is removed is recycled and used as a surface treatment on rural roads and laneways throughout the city.
Kelowna’s 2013 pavement management program will resurface approximately 19 kilometres of asphalt, this year, involving nine different road segments.
The pavement management program prioritizes and determines how to upgrade and repair the roads surface based on various tests and software analysis that provide a numerical ranking for each road.
The asphalt and paving contract for 2013 was awarded to Emil Anderson Construction Inc. for approximately $1.5 million. The work is expected to be complete by October.
