Small fire causes big traffic trouble in Chilliwack Thursday

A fire, believed to be deliberatly set, forced the closure of Vedder Road in both directions

  • Aug. 30, 2018 12:00 a.m.

There was smoke, but not much fire Thursday morning.

Still, there was enough chaos to close Vedder Road during the busy morning rush hour, forcing many motorists to find alternate routes.

The fire occurred at around 8 a.m. in a vacant, boarded-up building in the 5600 block of Lark Road, near the Sardis Bottle Depot.

Chilliwack firefighters from three halls responded. When they arrived they found smoke coming from the eaves and chimney.

Crews quickly brought the fire under control and the building suffered only light to moderate damage, said the Chilliwack Fire Department.

The fire, however, appears to be deliberately set and is under investigation by the department and RCMP.
