Fernie Search and Rescue is the recipient of the largest single amount to date of Tim Horton’s Smile Cookie sales. Through the program 3,075 cookies were sold, with all of the proceeds going towards Fernie Search and Rescue.
“We are overwhelmed by the generosity of Tim Hortons and the Fernie community,” said Simon Piney, Fernie Search and Rescue Manager. “We are using the money to upgrade our communications network for backcountry emergencies. We will purchase satellite GPS locator units that allow two-way communications for when our rescue teams are out of radio contact.”
Involved with the Smile Cookie program for seven years, Tim Hortons has donated over $16,000 to the community of Fernie. “Our staff was amazing, and the community is supportive every year,” commented Kristine Hovind-Pelletier, owner of the Fernie Tim Hortons.
The Smile Cookie program began in 1996 as a single fundraising project and has grown into a major fundraising event. Tim Horton’s locations across North America take part every year, and to date have raised over $4 million for local charities, hospitals, and community programs.
