Working smoke alarms are being credited with saving six occupants of a View Royal home early this morning. Shortly before 6 a.m. View Royal and Colwood firefighters were called for a structure fire in the 2300 block of Kami Court.
On arrival firefighters encountered a fire on the front porch of the house extending into the residence. A quick knockdown stopped the spread of fire and damage is estimated at approximately $30,000.
Six people inside were awakened by ar smoke alarm sounding. They were able to escape the home with no injuries. BC Ambulance, RCMP and BC Hydro also attended.
The fire is under investigation by View Royal fire investigators and RCMP.
View Royal/Colwood Emergency Social Services attended and will provide clothing and accommodations for the displaced family.
“This is another important reminder and example that working smoke alarms save lives,” said fire chief Paul Hurst in a release.
