Smoke from wildfires south of the border continued to hang over the Semiahmoo Peninsula Wednesday (Sept. 16), making the morning sun look like an evening moon, and all-but-obscuring White Rock’s iconic pier from view.
An air-quality advisory has been in effect for Metro Vancouver and the Fraser Valley Regional District since Sept. 8 due to the smoke, which is drifting north from fires in Washington and Oregon.
Metro Vancouver officials said Wednesday that while the air quality has improved slightly, ground-level smoke still remains and is expected to persist through the week.

Concerns with the air quality also affected mail service this week, with White Rock among several communities for which Canada Post suspended delivery services on Tuesday (Sept. 15) because of the smoke.
Other communities affected by the ‘Red service alert’ included Cloverdale, Duncan, the Okanagan Valley, Trail and New Westminster, according to a notice on Canada Post’s website.
