Smoother ride slated for Beaver Creek Road

The resurfacing project between Pierce Road and Wardrop Road will begin this spring.

A resurfacing project has been set for Beaver Creek Road to improve the conditions for travellers and extend the life of the road surface.

The Ministry of Transportation and Infrastructure announced that construction will occur to an eight-kilometre section of Beaver Creek Road from Pierce Road to Wardrop Road.

“That’s our main thoroughfare for Beaver Creek, it probably feeds about about 2,500 people plus Beaufort,” said John McNabb, Beaver Creek director with the Alberni-Clayoquot Regional District. “It’s great that their going to do it, it’s a well used road and I didn’t expect they were going to do it this year.”

The construction tender is posted on BC Bid and work is estimated to begin later this spring and wrap up by fall 2017.

During construction, some single lane alternating will be required.

“It’s a very narrow road and it is difficult when they’re doing that work but we’re not going to complain about that,” McNabb said.

This project is part of B.C. on the Move, the Province’s 10-year transportation plan.

McNabb said the cost to repair the road is not yet known at this time but that it should be substantial. “Well into a couple million dollars. [The cost] wasn’t in the information that we got either but from our paving at the airport I can tell you it’s not cheap,” he said. “The regional district and the provincial government pays it so that’s the good news. We don’t have to make another raise in taxes to get it done.”
