SNOWBOUND: Mission residents staying home to ride out the storm

It's been a quiet weekend in Mission as many people are unwilling to go out in the snow.

Snow has brought activities in Mission to a crawl as people are making the wise choice and waiting out the snowstorm at home.

The downtown core has been quiet and peaceful, with many shops deciding to close early or even for the day, rather than make their employees brave the icy roads to come into work.

If you were looking for a coffee, Tim Horton’s couldn’t help you as the downtown Mission location, that is normally open 24/7, decided to temporarily shut its doors.

Outside the downtown core, Shoppers Drug Mart, Safeway and Lanka Jewels also closed early due to the weather as did many other businesses.

Jamie Hayes, executive director of the Mission Downtown Business Association said many businesses decided to close, rather than risk the safety of employees and customers.

Both dance studios on First Avenue shut as well, so students would try to make lessons.

“Snow has definitely impacted business,” said Hayes, adding she doesn’t blame customers for wanting to stay away.

Elsewhere in Mission, several events had to be cancelled on the weekend, including the indoor farmers market, the Walk Mission event and swimming lessons at the Mission Leisure Centre.

The snow warning continues for  Mission as Environment Canada reports that bands of snow will continue to impact the Fraser Valley.

Localised additional snowfall amounts of 5 to 10 cm are expected before the snow eases off on Sunday evening.

Environment Canada advises drivers to be prepared to adjust their driving with changing road conditions. Surfaces such as highways, roads, walkways and parking lots may become difficult to navigate due to accumulating snow.
