Snowfall warning for parts of Vancouver Island

Up to 20 cm possible for inland areas of the Island

  • Jan. 8, 2019 12:00 a.m.

It was not a white Christmas for very many on Vancouver Island, but the wet white stuff may be coming to other areas today — including the Malahat.

Environment Canada is forecasting snowfall amounts of up to 20 centimetres tonight in some inland areas of the Island, with up to 5 cm near the coast.

They’re calling for a Pacific frontal system of cool air hovering over the region to bring precipitation in the form of snow, beginning this morning. The heaviest snow is expected over higher terrain and locations away from the water.

The snow is expected to continue throughout the day, and may mix with rain near the water. Gradual warming overnight will cause the snow to change to rain by Wednesday morning.
