Snowshoers located after going off the trail at Sovereign Lake

Vernon Search and Rescue found the individuals Sunday night

Four tourists were cold but otherwise unhurt after getting lost in the woods.

The Chinese visitors were snowshoeing at Sovereign Lake Nordic Centre Sunday afternoon when they left a main trail and decided to go cross-country.

“That;s when they got into trouble,” said Leigh Pearson, with Vernon Search and Rescue.

“They were not familiar with the area.”

Fortunately, there was cellular phone service and they were able to call the RCMP, who then contacted Vernon Search and Rescue at 5:10 p.m.

Sixteen members of the volunteer unit descended on the area and began the search.

“We were able to call them and provide them with updates,” said Pearson, adding that his unit also used flares to help pinpoint the location of the snowshoers.

They were located at 8:45 p.m. and it took about half-an-hour for them to be taken out of the area.

B.C. Ambulance was on scene and while the four were cold, they were not injured.
