One person can make a difference.

It’s a simple message that Craig Kielburger, co-founder of the WE organization, delivers to youth and adults all over the world, and on September 16, Kielburger will be delivering that message to Kelowna.

Kielburger will share his story of how he launched a small charity in Thornhill, ON, when he was 12 years old, which today – more than 20 years later – is a movement of millions across the globe. As part of the City of Kelowna’s Canada 150 celebrations, the hour-long motivational speech will focus on the importance of being a socially responsible citizen, and empowering youth to make a difference both locally and globally.

“As we celebrate 150 years since Confederation, we look to the past as a learning experience, and to the future to aspire to be better. WE is Canada’s largest youth service organization, and we’re betting on the selfless idealism of a new generation. We want to ensure that every Canadian child serves their local and global communities,” said Kielburger.

Kielburger has shared the stage with such influential people as His Royal Highness Prince Harry, Malala Yousafzai, and Richard Branson. His words encourage millions of people to overcome daily challenges, effect change, and uncover personal strength.

“Above all, WE means recognizing that we’re part of a larger community, and that our daily choices have an impact on that community. Canada was the first country in the world to adopt an official policy of multiculturalism. We strive for diversity and inclusion, with social safety nets, equality and democracy. These systems are not perfect, but at their best they embody Canadians’ desire to help our neighbours.”

This free family event is hosted by KPMG LLP in collaboration with the City of Kelowna.

“Craig has been an inspiration to youth around the world and we are excited to have him bring his message to Kelowna,” said David Bond, Office Managing Partner of KPMG’s Kelowna office. “His story shows us that one person can make a difference. We hope his message will be an inspiration for youth to hear first-hand it doesn’t matter how old you are, each person has the power to make positive change both locally and around the world.”

“As a city that values inclusivity and diversity, we are looking forward to Craig’s presentation in Kelowna,” said Mayor Colin Basran. “Our world is a better place when we work together to improve our communities – and today’s youth are the ones who are going to lead us to a more peaceful and accepting global society.”

An anticipated 850 guests will be attending the event on September 16 at the Kelowna Community Theater starting at 7:00 pm. To reserve a free ticket, visit: www.wearekelowna.eventbrite.ca.
