Social media claims not reported: Abbotsford Police

No recent reports of attempted abductions, sex ring group and strangers attempting to enter cars

Despite a lot of chatter on social media, the Abbotsford Police Department informed the public earlier today that they have not received recent reports of any attempted abductions, sex ring groups or strangers attempting to get into occupied vehicles.

Local Facebook groups have seen users post details of several alarming incidents over the past week, but on Tuesday night the Abbotsford Skating Club posted an “Important Safety Notice” to their Facebook page.

The warning states that several patrons of the ASC have been followed by a stranger to their vehicles while parked at the Matsqui Recreation Centre. The post adds that the stranger has then attempted to gain entry to the vehicle.

Abbotsford Police responded to that message and the other recent chatter with their own posting this morning.

They state that they have not received any of these types of warnings and encourage citizens to reach out to the police if anything similar occurs.

Sgt. Judy Bird also told The Abbotsford News that they have contacted local recreation centres and they have not heard of any incidents occurring there.

“We have reached out to the rec centres and there has not been an incident like this reported to them,” Bird stated. “And we have checked our files for the past week – when these posts have started to arise- and we don’t have files like this reported.”
