Sooke councillors mull election run

Councillors Kevin Pearson and Ebony Logins will stand for re-election

There will be at least three familiar faces on the municipal ballot when Sooke residents head to the polls next fall.

Councillors Kevin Pearson, Ebony Logins, and Brenda Parkinson say they plan to stand for re-election in the Oct. 20 municipal elections.

And Pearson, 60, could be aiming higher.

The two-term councillor is mulling over the possibility of running for mayor.

“I will be seeking re-election as a councillor. I have not decided whether to run for the mayor’s job,” Pearson said, adding he does not want to appear like he’s playing politics declaring too early.

“I still think there’s lots to be done in Sooke. We have four or five good months ahead of us with the current council and a lot can get done.”

Logins is planning to run for what would be her second term as councillor.

“There’s still a lot to do, a lot to chip away at,” she said.

Logins said big issues for the next council will likely be sewer, transportation and the planning and construction of a new community centre.

Parkinson is finishing up her second term on council. She was first elected in 2005 and again in 2014.

The development of Lot A, parking, and development are high on her list of things to do in the upcoming term.

“We [council] are working well together as a team right now,” she said, “and I would like to see that continue.”

WEB POLL: Do you support term limits for municipal councils?

Councillors Bev Berger, Rick Kasper and Mayor Maja Tait are still undecided..

Both Berger and Kasper said it’s too early to make a decision, while Tait said, “probably, maybe.”

Tait said with the election still more than 10 months away, there’s still a lot of work to do.

She said issues such as community health initiatives, transportation, and local infrastructure improvements are currently the focus of her attention — not the election.

“In the interest of the community, you need to focus on the priorities at the council table and the business that needs to be done now. You save the election for another time,” Tait said.

Coun. Kerrie Reay announced earlier she would not seek re-election.

In the meantime, the municipal election is heating up in other Greater Victoria municipalities where most mayors have indicated they will seek re-election, including Victoria Mayor Lisa Helps, Langford Mayor Stew Young and Metchosin Mayor John Ranns.
