A 30-year-old Sooke man faces several charges following a four-hour standoff with police on Monday night.
At 10:15 p.m., Sooke RCMP received a call of a man with a sawed-off shotgun at a residence in the 2100 block of Church Road, uttering threats to kill another man and burn the house down.
As officers began mobilizing into the home, they could hear what sounded like a shotgun racking, said Sooke RCMP Staff Sgt. Jeff McArthur, adding the gunman was determined to be inside an outbuilding on the property, which was a small farm.
Several attempts were made to have the suspect exit the building and surrender, but he was not cooperative.
“The suspect responded to numerous requests for him to surrender by emphasizing his lack of affection for the police with coarse language,” McArthur said, adding the RCMP Vancouver Island Emergency Response Team was called in and tear gas was deployed inside the building.
Shortly afterwards, the standoff ended when the suspect walked out. He was uninjured.
Daniel Cecil Mcgee is charged for possession of a prohibited weapon without licence or registration, uttering threats to burn, destroy or damage, and fail to comply with probation order.
