As students revel in the remaining days of summer, Sooke School District has been busy making sure those classrooms are clean and ready to go by fall.
One of the biggest upgrade projects this summer is focused on Edward Milne Community School with a new roof in the works.
This is a major project, with a $600,000, said school board chair Bob Phillips. In addition, there was some work done outside of the school as well.
“We had some intrusion of roots and moisture in the bottom [of walls], so we’ve been looking after that,” he said, adding that artists will also be involved in the restoration project, painting murals facing the school on the left hand side, going in towards the entrance.
The murals will be part of the school’s 20th anniversary celebrations this October.
A new boiler is being added as well, bringing the cost between the boiler and roof upgrade to $1.2 million.
EMCS isn’t the only school in Sooke getting some love though.
John Muir elementary is getting drainage work, roof work, while regular maintenance and cleanup is performed at Journey Middle School, Sooke elementary and Saseenos elementary.
Phillips said Saseenos may receive an additional portables this year, but those details have yet to be confirmed.
Regardless, work is expected to all be finished before students return to school in September, meaning for the month of August, it’s all hands on deck, Phillips noted.
