Sooke’s search for corporate officer continues

Commitment made to council that the position would be fully competed when management transition complete.

Sooke’s director of corporate services job isn’t expected to be filled until at least mid-September, says chief administrative officer Teresa Sullivan.

Gabryel Joseph is the current director of corporate services and corporate officer, and was hand-picked by Sullivan last February as the district went through a management transition .

Sullivan said she made a commitment to the mayor and council that the position would be fully competed when the transition was complete.

“We did not know how long the transition would take,” Sullivan said.

“He has done such an outstanding job that this department is now in good shape. It’s got really great staff and all the rest of it.”

Joseph signed a four-year, $115,000 a year contract, but the contract can end at any time without cost to the district, Sullivan said.

Over the last five months, Joseph has worked on the transition, while Sullivan wrote a new job description for the position.

Joseph hasn’t indicated whether he will apply for the permanent position. He will not get any preferential treatment if he decides to apply, Sullivan said, pointing out that she might not participate in the hiring process.

Sullivan is looking at a recently retired CAO to conduct the job search, interviewing and hiring.

The competition closes Sept. 1.
