South Delta crime beat, week of Jan. 23

The purpose of the crime beat is to educate and inform the public about some of the property crime trends occurring in South Delta and other files of interest. It is submitted weekly by the Delta Police Department. If you see anything occurring that you believe to be suspicious, call 911 for in progress crimes and emergencies or 604-946-4411 for other assistance.

The following are some of the calls police responded to in the previous week:

Ladner

• Jan. 23, 8:41 a.m., 8500-block Highway 99: Using radar, police observed a vehicle pass at a high rate of speed — 151 km/h in an 80 km/h zone. At the same time, police observed another vehicle pass at a speed of 152 km/h. Both vehicles continued speeding at a high rate for approximately 500 metres until police initiated a traffic stop. Both drivers were charged with excessive speeding and served violation tickets.

• Jan. 25, 1:55 a.m., River Road and McNeely Way: Police were conducting proactive patrols in the area when a vehicle was found to have insurance that expired on Dec. 28, 2020. A traffic stop was initiated and an examination of the plate showed that the decal had been coloured pink to give the illusion that it was in fact valid. The driver was issued violation tickets for not having insurance, not having a driver’s licence, and having an altered plate. The vehicle was towed and the plates were seized to be returned to ICBC.

• Jan. 27, 8:33 p.m., 4600-block Clarence Taylor Cres.: Police observed a vehicle unable to stay in their own lane. Police conducted a traffic stop where the driver advised that he had consumed alcohol “earlier” in the evening prior to driving. Police read the approved screening device demand and the male gave two “warn” results. Police issued the driver a three-day immediate roadside prohibition and his roommate came to pick up his vehicle.

• Jan. 31, 10:50 a.m., 5457 Ladner Trunk Rd.: Police observed a vehicle roll through an unobstructed stop sign while making a right hand turn. Police initiated a traffic stop as the vehicle pulled into a gas station. Police determined that the driver was driving his vehicle without a qualified supervisor, as per required by his B.C learner’s driver’s licence. Police issued the driver a violation ticket for driving contrary to restrictions. The driver then had a qualified supervisor attend so that he could drive away.

• Jan. 31, 5:32 p.m., 5400-block Linden Dr.: Complainant contacted police to report that the intersection was flooded with water. On attendance, police noted that a significant amount of water was gushing out of a long crack on the road surface, and part of the road surface had sunk three inches. Police observed that water was starting to flood residents’ front yards. Police further determined that the source was likely a broken water main directly under the street. Police shut down the entire street, as they believed that a sink hole might form under the road surface. Police contacted Delta Engineering, who were able to successfully shut the water off.

Tsawwassen and Tsawwassen First Nation

• Jan. 23, 10:45 p.m., Canoe Pass Way and Salish Sea Drive: Police observed a vehicle stopped in the middle of the lane. Police initiated a traffic stop and the driver was unable to produce his driver’s licence, but instead produced his passport and vehicle registration for identification. The driver stated he had just got off the ferry and was lost, so he stopped in the roadway to figure out how to get to the highway. Police issued the driver a violation ticket for failing to produce a driver’s licence. The driver was not happy with this and thought there should be consideration given to the fact that he lost his licence. Police explained the duty of a driver to produce a driver’s licence when requested by police after a traffic stop.

• Jan. 24, 2:00 a.m., Highway 17: Police observed a vehicle driving 10 to 15 km/h below the speed limit. Police initiated a traffic stop for suspected impairment and detected an odour of liquor. An approved screening device demand was read and the driver provided two samples with a “warn” result. The driver was given a three-day immediate roadside prohibition.
