South Delta crime beat, week of March 15

The purpose of the crime beat is to educate and inform the public about some of the property crime trends occurring in South Delta and other files of interest. It is submitted weekly by the Delta Police Department. If you see anything occurring that you believe to be suspicious, call 911 for in progress crimes and emergencies or 604-946-4411 for other assistance.

The following are some of the calls police responded to in the previous week:

Ladner

• March 16, 9:14 a.m., 6000-block Highway 17: Police were conducting proactive patrols when they observed a vehicle approaching them at a high rate of speed. Police radar read the speed at 125 km/h in a posted 80 km/h zone. The vehicle passed police and continued up to a speed of 140 km/h. Police stopped the vehicle and issued the driver an excessive speeding ticket. Their car was also impounded.

• March 16, 9:30 a.m., 4000-block River Rd.: Complainant requested police to assist with the disposal of old road flares. Police attended and the complainant handed police five road flares estimated to be 50 years old. The complainant advised police that he has no use for the flares and does not know if they still function. Police seized the flares and logged them in exhibits for destruction.

• March 16, 9:27 p.m., 5700-block Ladner Trunk Rd.: Complainant reported a disturbance in the nearby area. Police attended and found a female yelling at staff complaining that her order was wrong. Police spoke with the female, who was slurring her speech and had an odour of liquor on her breath, and she explained that the fast food restaurant got her order wrong. The female advised police she had received her order by going through the drive-thru, and confirmed she was the driver. Police accompanied the female to her parked vehicle where police read the approved screening device demand. The female provided two samples, both resulting in a “fail.” The female was given a 90-day initial roadside prohibition as well as a 30-day vehicle impoundment.

• March 17, 8:15 a.m., 6800-block Highway 17: Police were conducting proactive patrols when they observed a vehicle approach at a high rate of speed in a construction zone. The rear radar locked speed at 125 km/h in a 50 km/h zone. The vehicle then sped by police, still speeding at a high rate of speed of 125 km/h. Police conducted a traffic stop, the driver was issued an excessive speeding ticket and their vehicle was towed.

• March 18, 8:00 a.m., 5000-block 48B Ave.: Complainant informed police that her bicycle had been stolen from the carport at her townhouse overnight. The complainant did not have any serial numbers for the bike, and had not registered it with Garage 529. Reported for informational purposes. Tsawwassen and Tsawwassen First Nation

• March 17, 12:15 a.m., 1600-block 56th St.: Police conducted a traffic stop to check for sobriety. The driver of the vehicle was read the approved screening device demand, but the driver did not produce an accurate reading due to insufficient air flow into the device. This resulted in the driver being issued a 90-day immediate roadside prohibition for refusal to blow, as well as had their vehicle towed.

• March 20, 5:08 p.m., 1500-block 56th St.: A member of the public reported a man who appeared to be passed out in his vehicle in a parking lot. Police attended and located a man known to be living out of his vehicle who frequents the Tsawwassen area. The man was awake and alert, and advised police he was doing well and had just finished dinner. The man declined offers of food and coffee from the police.

• March 21, 2:10 p.m., 4000 Canoe Pass Way: Police searched a licence plate in their computer system and found that the driver’s licence associated to the vehicle had been expired since Feb. 24, 2021. Police conducted a traffic stop and identified the driver as the female with the expired driver’s licence, as well as having the wrong address on her driver’s licence. The driver was issued a warning ticket for driving with no driver’s licence as well as a failing to change the listed address.

• March 21, 4:47 p.m., 4000 block Canoe Pass Way: Police were approached by a male who advised that he had accidentally locked his keys, wallet, cell phone and small dog inside his vehicle. Police were able to use the vehicle access kit from their police vehicle to unlock the driver’s side door without issue. The male was very appreciative of the help and proceeded on his way.
