South Delta crime beat, week of March 8

The purpose of the crime beat is to educate and inform the public about some of the property crime trends occurring in South Delta and other files of interest. It is submitted weekly by the Delta Police Department. If you see anything occurring that you believe to be suspicious, call 911 for in progress crimes and emergencies or 604-946-4411 for other assistance.

The following are some of the calls police responded to in the previous week:

Ladner

• March 10, 3:40 p.m., Highway 17 off ramp: Complainant reported that they were involved in a road rage incident. The complainant stated that it had occurred when the other driver made a lane change without signaling, causing the complainant to slam on his breaks. Both drivers eventually got out of their cars and exchanged foul language before pushing one another. The complainant then got back in his car and headed to work when he noticed that the other male was following him. It turned out that both parties worked at the same business. Police spoke with the two males at length and both parties agreed that the incident had gotten blown out of proportion. Police verbally warned both males about their behaviour and both parties agreed to move past the incident.

• March 10, 4:08 p.m., 1000-block 53A St.: Complainant reported that their daughter had brought home a dog without her parent’s consent or knowledge. Police advised the complainant that the issue over an unwanted family pet was civil in nature. Police discussed options, including a remedy through the Residential Tenancy Branch and civil court.

• March 13, 1:23 p.m., 4900-block 57th St.: Police conducted a traffic stop due to the vehicle travelling approximately 70 km/h in a 50 km/h zone. Police formed suspicion that there had been alcohol consumption and an approved screening device demand was read. The driver provided two samples, both resulting in a “warn.” The driver was issued a three-day immediate roadside prohibition and their vehicle was towed.

• March 13, 4:32 p.m., Highway 17A and Ladner Trunk Road: Police were at the intersection when they observed a large piece of cardboard and a large piece of grey foam occupying the right turn lane. Police removed the items from the roadway and transported them for disposal.

• March 13, 6:36 p.m., 5700-block Deltaport Way: Police were conducting mobile traffic enforcement when they observed a vehicle approaching at a speed of 135 km/h in an 80 km/h zone. The driver was issued an excessive speeding ticket as well as a seven-day car impoundment.

Tsawwassen and Tsawwassen First Nation

• March 8, 2:47 a.m., Highway 17 and Salish Sea Dr.: Police observed a male walking on the side of the highway with no reflective gear, but he was wearing adequate clothing and was prepared for the weather. Police offered the male a ride to the ferry so he could catch the early ferry to return home to Vancouver Island.

• March 9, 5:52 a.m., 2100-block Highway 17: Complainant reported a vehicle that was speeding and towing a trailer that was missing a tire. Police located the vehicle and the trailer, which did not have a licence plate, at the ferry terminal. Police spoke to driver, who had already replaced the flat tire on the trailer. The remaining tires required additional air pressure and the rear two were showing signs of wear. Police issued the owner of the trailer a ticket for not having a licence plate and a “notice and order” requiring the remaining tires be checked. Police advised the driver to make repairs immediately after disembarking from the ferry.

• March 10, 6:09 p.m., 1300-block Enderby Ave.: Complainant reported that a vehicle was speeding in a 30 km/h zone. The complainant stated that her children were playing in the area and that she had tried to signal to the driver to slow down, however the driver yelled at the complainant prior to speeding away in his vehicle. Police spoke to the driver over the phone, who denied speeding and stated he was driving the speed limit. Police warned the driver to slow down and educated him on the speed limit and dangers of speeding. The driver stated he understood.

• March 13, 9:49 p.m., 1100-block Ferry Causeway: Police located a vehicle parked nearby with a large bonfire consisting of wooden pallets burning openly. Police identified all parties present for the bonfire. The bonfire was extinguished without issue, and all parties cleaned up the garbage and loaded up the remaining pallets into their truck. A contravention ticket was issued to one of the parties for “making or lighting a fire in public place,” with the cost to be split between the friends.
