South Delta crime beat, week of May 10

The purpose of the crime beat is to educate and inform the public about some of the property crime trends occurring in South Delta and other files of interest. It is submitted weekly by the Delta Police Department. If you see anything occurring that you believe to be suspicious, call 911 for in progress crimes and emergencies or 604-946-4411 for other assistance.

The following are some of the calls police responded to in the previous week:

Ladner

• May 13, 9:26 a.m., 4600-block Clarence Taylor Cres.: Staff at a nearby leisure centre reported that a vehicle parked in the parking lot was unoccupied, unlocked and had been running for the past 30 minutes. Police attended, cleared the vehicle and confirmed that it was unoccupied with no damage and nothing suspicious. Police made contact with the owner of the car, who advised that he mistakenly left it running while he went out for a run. Police turned the ignition off and locked the vehicle with the owner’s permission.

• May 15, 3:00 p.m., 5600-block Grove Ave.: Resident reported that someone had entered his unlocked vehicle overnight and stolen cigarettes and a lighter. Nothing further was taken.

• May 15, 5:27 p.m., location withheld: Police received a report from a woman who advised she had received an email from someone she knew asking for $1,600 in Amazon and iTunes gift cards. As the email was from a known contact the woman purchased the gift cards and sent the card numbers via email. The woman later realized her friend’s email address had been compromised, and that the request was not legitimate. The woman was aware there was no way to get her money back. Police confirmed she had not sent any personal information.

• May 15, 5:58 a.m., 2900-block Highway 99: Complainant reported a male standing in the long grass wearing tactical gear and loading an assault rifle. Police located a vehicle and spoke to a male who was wearing tactical pants and stated he had been taking photographs of the sunrise. The male was co-operative and voluntary showed police his photographing equipment which consisted of a long black stand that was likely mistaken by the complainant for a rifle.

• May 16, 3:51 p.m., 4900-block Chisholm St.: Complainant reported a dog locked in a Tesla with the windows rolled up for over an hour. Police called the owner of the vehicle as it was gone on arrival. The owner stated that the Tesla has a “pet on board” setting which keeps the vehicle temperature controlled, and a vehicle display that shows the inside temperature and a message saying “my owner will be back soon.”

Tsawwassen and Tsawwassen First Nation

• May 12, 1:45 p.m., 1300-block Tsawwassen Dr.: Police responded to a complaint of damage to a vehicle on the gravel road. A vehicle was performing donuts in the gravel road, which had kicked up rocks causing damage to the passenger side, hood and windshield of another vehicle. Police issued a violation ticket to the driver of the first vehicle for driving without consideration and both drivers were advised to contact ICBC.

• May 13, 11:25 a.m., 56th Street and 18th Avenue: Complainant contacted police to report that a vehicle with an Alberta licence plate was speeding excessively, tailgating other vehicles and driving aggressively. Police later located the vehicle driving in an unrelated location and initiated a traffic stop. The driver was adamant that he was driving normally and believed that the complaint was a result of him driving in BC with Alberta licence plates. Police advised the driver that because his vehicle draws attention with Alberta licence plates, he should pay particular attention to his driving habits. No further enforcement action was taken.

• May 14, 8:24 p.m., 6000 17A Ave.: Complainant reported several groups of teens drinking alcohol and starting fires on the beach at the dyke trail located near Beach Grove Park. Police attended and observed multiple groups including teens, families and couples having beach fires, with some groups having open alcohol. Police spoke with each of the groups, educating them on the regulations. Police had the fires put out, garbage cleaned up and alcohol put away and all groups were co-operative.

• May 14, 11:19 p.m., 12600-block 97th Ave.: Complainant called police to report a vehicle was swerving on the road and that he had observed the driver consuming liquor earlier in the night at an event. Police located the vehicle and performed a traffic stop. During the stop police noted a strong smell of liquor on the driver’s breath. The driver was read an approved screening device demand and they provided two samples, both resulting in a “fail.” The driver was given of a 90-day driving prohibition and a 30-day vehicle impoundment.
