South Delta crime beat, week of May 31

The purpose of the crime beat is to educate and inform the public about some of the property crime trends occurring in South Delta and other files of interest. It is submitted weekly by the Delta Police Department. If you see anything occurring that you believe to be suspicious, call 911 for in progress crimes and emergencies or 604-946-4411 for other assistance.

The following are some of the calls police responded to in the previous week:

Ladner

• May 31, 5600-block 16th Ave.: Complainant reported a vehicle was speeding and having difficulty maintaining its lane. Police located the vehicle and conducted a traffic stop, where the driver stated he had drank two alcoholic beverages one hour ago. An approved screening device demand was read, and the two tests resulted in a “warn.” The driver was issued a 3-day immediate roadside prohibition. The vehicle was then driven away from the scene by the sober passenger.

• May 31, 7:46 p.m., Deas Island: Complainant reported that there was a Sea-Doo floating in the river between Deas Island and Richmond. Police contacted dispatch and requested a boat to check the Sea-Doo to ensure there was not a person stuck underneath. Shortly following, search and rescue arrived on the scene and confirmed that the Sea-Doo was indeed anchored down. Following that, a complainant called and reported he had seen the entire incident, where the rider of the Sea-Doo got stuck and was picked up by another boater. Police spoke with the rider, who stated that he was waiting for the tide to be high enough so he could retrieve the Sea-Doo.

• June 2, 9:51 p.m., 6400-block Ladner Trunk Rd.: Complainant was stopped at a red light at an intersection when they observed two teenagers looking at him from the next lane and throwing garbage at his vehicle through the passenger window. Police attended the registered owner’s residence and gave a stern warning to the teenagers, who were apologetic. The parents of both teenagers were notified as well.

• June 6, 6:46 p.m., location withheld: Complainant reported that her neighbour’s son was smoking marijuana in their backyard and the smoke was going into her residence. The complainant also called reporting that she and the neighbour had a verbal dispute. Police advised both parties to not communicate with each other and to call police if they feel unsafe.

Tsawwassen and Tsawwassen First Nation

• June 1, 6:23 p.m., 500-block Centennial Pky.: Complainant reported seeing three males having open liquor within a vehicle. Police attended and conducted a traffic stop to check for sobriety. Police conducted an approved screening device demand on the driver, who blew a “pass.” Police determined the driver was not impaired.

• June 3, 4-8 p.m., 1200-block 56th St.: Complainant reported the theft of a Rocky Mountain bike, along with the bike lock. The investigation is ongoing. The public is reminded that they can contact their District Community Police Office to have their bikes added to the Garage 529 anti-bike theft program.

• June 5, 10:34 p.m., 900-block BC Ferries Causeway: Delta Fire dispatch had advised police that there were two beach fires near the ferry terminal. Police attended and located approximately 10-15 people around two separate small wood-burning fires. All parties were advised of City of Delta’s fire bylaws and asked to extinguish their fires, which they did without incident.

• June 6, 2:30 a.m., 5000-block 1st Ave.: Police initiated a traffic stop of a vehicle for speeding and driving in the opposing lane. During the traffic stop, many indications of alcohol impairment were detected. An approved screening device demand was read and both tests resulted in a “fails.” The driver was issued an immediate roadside prohibition and had their vehicle towed.
