South Delta crime beat, week of Sept. 13

The purpose of the crime beat is to educate and inform the public about some of the property crime trends occurring in South Delta and other files of interest. It is submitted weekly by the Delta Police Department. If you see anything occurring that you believe to be suspicious, call 911 for in progress crimes and emergencies or 604-946-4411 for other assistance.

The following are some of the calls police responded to in the previous week:

Ladner

• Sept. 14, 4:25 a.m., 4900-block Elliott St.: Complainant reported a break-and-enter in progress at a local business. Two individuals fled the scene after attempting to force entry to the main floor door. The individuals were spooked by the complainant’s husband. The front door of the business had its glass removed without being shattered. While clearing the business, police observed multiple drawers were left open and the cash drawer was on the ground with loose change all around.

• Sept. 14, 4:30 p.m., 4800-block Elliott St.: Police were called to a local store after a patron refused to wear a mask. The patron was upset over the new COVID regulations. Police stood by and facilitated his purchase while ensuring he was wearing a mask, and left the business without incident.

• Sept. 15, 6:00 p.m., 6300-block Ladner Trunk Rd.: Police observed male leaving a parking lot in a vehicle and conducted a traffic stop to check for driver sobriety. Police asked the male if he had consumed alcohol, and the male responded that he “did not know.” Suspicion was formed and police read the approved screening device demand. After five failed attempts, the male stated he was going back to his car, where he was arrested for refusal and obstruction. Officer served the driver a 30-day impoundment and a 90-day driving prohibition.

Tsawwassen and Tsawwassen First Nation

• Sept. 15, 12:40 p.m., 900-block BC Ferries Causesway: Complainant advised that two beige rain barrels were stolen from the truck pull out on the ferry causeway. Complainant described the rain barrels as rectangular, approximately five feet high and two feet wide. The barrels were stolen between Sept. 11 at 6 p.m. and Sept. 12 at 2 p.m.

• Sept. 16, 6:00 p.m., 4900-block Canoe Pass Way: A loss prevention officer reported the theft of a Sanyo “boombox” radio, valued at $80, by unknown young adult male who concealed the radio under his jacket and left on foot. Area patrol was negative.

• Sept. 17, 6:00 p.m., 5300-block 4th Ave.: Complainant reported an election sign theft from his yard. CCTV showed a male wearing a light-coloured hoody, sweat pants and running shoes. The male was seen walking to the election sign, removing it and taking it into the vehicle. The male then drove off and proceeded southbound.
