South Surrey roads flooded

Traffic along two South Surrey thoroughfares – 152 Street and 24 Avenue – was slowed this morning by flooding.

South Surrey motorists got a bit of a wet commute Friday morning, after crews working near 24 Avenue and 152 Street damaged a water main.

The break caused an ankle-deep river of water to flow north along the east side of 152 Street and pool at the southeast corner of the intersection at 24 Avenue.

According to the City of Surrey, damage to the 150-millimetre main occurred around 8:15 a.m., during excavation to perform a “water main tie in.”

“The scheduled tie-in work was to take place at this very location and the on-site excavator accidentally hit the water main prior to it being turned off for the scheduled work,” an email to Peace Arch News from the city’s engineering department explains.

The outage – isolated around 9 a.m. – was contained to the intersection and, according to the city, did not affect any customers. The main was to remain off for about six hours.
