Sovereign Lake Nordic Centre is in the spotlight.
Western Snow Sports magazine has named the North Okanagan facility as one of the top five nordic ski areas in North America,
“It’s definitely an honour to be in that group,” said Glenn Bond, Sovereign’s club manager.
“The membership has a lot of pride in the centre and the recognition it has received.”
The magazine article by skier Doug Emory states that Sovereign Lake has the longest ski season in North America, stretching from Halloween into June.
“The resort hosts numerous professional events and includes several world-renowned trails among its 50 manicured kilometres including the new Carl Wylie Trail built for last spring’s Sparkling Hill Masters World Cup event,” writes Emory.
“You will also rub elbows with a dedicated staff and given the centre’s 5,500-foot elevation, spend your days skiing out on to marvelously dry snow.”
The article also refers to Roberto Carcelen, who represented Peru in nordic skiing in the 2010 Winter Olympics. Carcelen says Sovereign Lake “is generally considered by professionals as the best ski area on the planet.”
Ten teams trained at Sovereign for the Whistler Games.
Bond believes the Western Snow Sports coverage will increase Sovereign’s profile and attract more skiers.
“Through international events, Sovereign is well known and this keeps that momentum going,” he said.
The other top five nordic areas mentioned in the article are Mt. Bachelor in Oregon, Whistler Olympic Park/Callaghan County, the Methow Valley Sports Trails Association in Washington State and Mount Washington Resort on Vancouver Island.
