A grass-lined boulevard, LED lighting and bike lanes are part of the Spadina Avenue redesign.
Road work has closed off the street to all but local traffic now from Corbould Street to Ashwell Road.
The new parking lot will have fewer parking spaces than before but there’s a plan for that according to the notice from City of Chilliwack:
“The reduction in available road parking will be 50 stalls, but the planned parking lot expansion adjacent to the Chilliwack Curling Club will add more total parking stalls than will be lost in this project.”

The $2.8 million project will be under construction with a timeline from August to October, and it was listed in the city’s 10-year capital plan to spruce up that end of Spadina. The idea was to have it mirror the treed look of Spadina to the east, where pink ornamental plum trees used to bloom every spring on the grassy median before they were removed.
They will redo the parking lot, adding street trees, new lighting, sidewalks, and green space in a centre island separating the two lanes of traffic.
This road project is part of the ‘neighbourhood greenway’ vision described in the Downtown Land Use and Development Plan (2010). Neighbourhood ‘greenways’ are described as enhanced pedestrian and bicycle connections linking key activity nodes and residential neighbourhoods.
A tree lined buffer will be going in between the sidewalk and the travel lane “enhance safety and comfort for pedestrians.”
