Spallumcheen reviews agricultural area plan

Committee members updating information to ensure farmers' needs are met

Farming is critical to Spallumcheen’s economic and social values and steps are being taken to ensure those goals in the future.

Members of the agricultural advisory committee are currently reviewing the agricultural area plan.

“We will update the census statistics and go through each item that was determined a priority and look at what’s achievable,” said Coun. Christine Fraser.

“The ones that are not applicable will move to the bottom.”

One issue that may garner action is establishing a land bank so owners of vacant property can make farmers know it is available for lease.

“There is land sitting there not being farmed and we could get land covered in weeds producing,” said Fraser.

Other possibilities is awareness about environmental farm plans and encouraging young people to enter the industry.

It could take about six months for committee to review the area plan.

“We want to make sure we’re doing everything we can to promote agriculture in Spallumcheen,” said Fraser.
