The new award is called the Volunteer Organization Achievement award

The District of Sparwood has come up with a new way to honour and recognize volunteers in the community.

On February 18, the district introduced the Volunteer Organization Achievement Award, which is a new initiative intended to commend local volunteer groups. The winning group will be presented with a $500 donation award at Sparwood’s Volunteer Appreciation Day Celebration on May 3.

The district is encouraging residents to nominate groups who they think are deserving of the award. According to the District of Sparwood, the chosen organization should “demonstrate initiative, leadership and creativity in their service to the community, inspire others to volunteer and improve the overall quality of life for Sparwood residents.”

“We are really happy to launch this new award,” said Sparwood mayor David Wilks. “We have numerous long standing, committed volunteer organizations who make a huge impact on the quality of life for Sparwood residents. All of our groups provide hours of time, services and their talents to support a wide range of social, cultural and recreational activities that people have come to know and love and we are very thankful for their commitment to the community.”

Nominations for the award are being accepted until March 15. In order to be selected, groups must provide direct support or services within the District of Sparwood, as well as be a volunteer organization based in Sparwood or the Elk Valley. Eligible organizations must have provided their support or services in the area for at least one year.

Nomination forms can be found online at Sparwood.ca/volunteering. Alternatively, hard copies can be both picked up and dropped off at the District of Sparwood main office or the Sparwood Leisure Centre. Emailed forms will be accepted at sparwood@sparwood.ca and mail in forms can be sent to Box 520, Sparwood BC, V0B 2G0.
