Sparwood Golf Club ready for summer

The Sparwood Golf Club is revitalised and all stocked up, ready for the 2021 summer season.

With opening day on May 1, Norma McDougall, who is the treasurer at the club said that there had been plenty of keen golfers through the nine-hole course already.

“We had tonnes of people golfing all last week.

“It’s just in great shape, and we’re open on permanent greens – and they’re green, which is really something for this time of year,” she said.

The club spent last year getting the house in order after some questionable management in years gone by, with volunteer help and a helping hand from the District of Sparwood and local businesses returning the club, its grounds and its amenities to their former glory.

“We’ve got new equipment, we’ve got a new deck, we’ve just had really good support from the community through grants.”

Grant support has come through the District of Sparwood and local organisations like Teck and community groups – help which McDougall said had been great for sprucing up the place for a good year ahead, especially since more folks will be enjoying their down time closer to home.

“Its the thing to do – last year we had a phenomenal year with green fee people, and we’re already seeing an increase in people buying memberships this year. Younger people and families are purchasing golf memberships. People are going to golf more this year.”

The club also has a new restaurant in the clubhouse, with the East to West Lifestyle Pub opening up on May 5, specialising in fresh east coast-style seafood fare.

This weekend the club will also be hosting a mother’s day special – all mothers can play golf for free on Sunday, May 9, and there will be a 25 percent discount on ladies clothing at the pro shop – which is also fully stocked and ready for keen golfers to get geared up for the season.
