Lilac Terrace has opened a palliative care room at their facilities. The idea for the room was developed in 2014, after Lilac Terrace received a grant as part of a housing initiative.
“We received a grant to do an expansion to the building and we developed the idea then,” said Deborah Friesen, administrator of Lilac Terrace. “It’s been two years of actual work but we have been trying for something for Sparwood for a long, long time – some sort of higher form of care.”
The room offers clients home-style amenities, as well as proper equipment to care for their wellbeing.
“The idea is that it’s for people that would like to die at home but maybe don’t have the proper facilities or equipment or the proper space for family to stay with them. We provide that,” said Friesen. “The room is set up with space for the family to stay overnight; there is a hospital bed, there is a ceiling lift to transfer them. All the equipment is there that might be needed.”
Lilac Terrace is working with the Elk Valley Hospice society to provide all the support that families will need for palliative care.
