The Abbotsford SPCA is trying to link up owners and pets after last Friday’s fire at the Willows apartment building in Mission.
So far, seven cats and one rabbit belonging to residents have been turned over to the organization’s care.
“We can only imagine how devastated these families are to lose everything,” says Jodi Dunlop, manager of the Abbotsford SPCA. “We are glad that we’re able to make this time a bit easier by providing a safe, loving environment for their pets.”
Some of the animals were brought in directly from the fire, while others were found over the weekend in the burned rubble.
“We do have names and contact information for some of the animals, but we are still looking for the guardians of others,” says Dunlop. She urges anyone who is missing their pet to call 604-850-1584 to see if the animal has been turned in. “The families have been through so much, and we’d love to be able to reunite them with their pets and to provide whatever support we can.”
Dunlop says any unclaimed pets after this week will be put up for adoption simply due to a lack of space.
“Three-quarters of my kennel space is filled with these animals.”
A massive fire on Third Avenue May 17 destroyed the 26-unit apartment building, which is expected to be demolished.
