Classic and custom vehicles lined Fraser Lake’s Soccer Fields in the first show and shine since the COVID-19 pandemic resulted in considerable disruption to day-to-day life.

The “Breaking Free” Show and Shine attracted dozens of car enthusiasts Sunday, July 18, despite the drizzle throughout the low-key event.

Organizer George Dinsmore said typically there would have been prizes and awards.

“With the uncertainty of Covid we did not go after any donations or anything, but we knew that there were people anxious to go to a show and shine as soon as the restrictions got lifted, and we were just lucky enough that they lifted enough that we could have one,” he said.

“It was kind of last minute, and that’s why we called it breaking free.”

In previous years the Show and Shine has been held at White Swan Park where the Village of Fraser Lake freshly installed a new sprinkler system.

Because there were concerns of potential damage, Dinsmore said the village had asked that the event be hosted at the Soccer Fields behind the arena.

Minus the gloomy day that likely resulted in a lower turnout, he said the location was a perfect fit with its stage, electricity supply, and available washrooms.

“Because of the mixed group, and nobody had been out for a long time there was a lot of shuffling around and visiting. Everybody was chit-chatting with somebody—sometimes you’d go and talk to someone, and you’d have a hard time getting a word in edgewise.”

Around 21 vehicles participated, with owners making the drive out as far as Terrace.

For some, it would mark their first time attending a show and shine or venturing out to one in about five years due to health.

Dinsmore noted it was nice to have people show up and sent out special thanks to Shane Westerman, Mike Westerman, Nathan Dinsmore and Jody Jenkinson for their help.

“If we’d be able to have one last year, that would have been the seventh annual…If we can have one next year, we’ll be calling it the seventh annual because it will be the full deal,” he added.
