Crews are reminding motorists to slow down in the area surrounding Lizard Creek Bridge, as work continues to replace it.
The speed limit on Highway 3 has been lowered to 60 km/hr in the work zone, which encompasses a 3 kilometer stretch of highway between Mt. Fernie Park Road and Fernie Alpine Resort. When crews are working on the road, the speed limit will be reduced to 50 km/hr.
The announcement about the reduced speeds came today from Projex Infrastructure Group, the company awarded the project by the Ministry of Transportation and Infrastructure. A spokesperson with the company said they have noticed drivers travelling at excessive speeds, and that they want everyone to go home safe at the end of the day.
These new reduced speed limits are effective 24 hours a day, seven days a week.

Crews are currently constructing a two-lane detour which will allow residents to drive around the old bridge on a temporary one. Once the new bridge is installed, the detour will be taken out and traffic will be switched back. The project is set to be completed by mid-November.
Project Superintendent Dan Renwick said it was about time a new bridge was installed.
“Looking at the state of the old bridge right now, it’s deteriorating,” he said. “Being on a major highway, it’s important for everyone that there’s a new bridge in place.”
