Speed limit urged for Mabel motorists

Mabel Lake and Grindrod area residents concerned about driving safety

Rural Enderby residents want to put the brakes on some dangerous traffic conditions.

The Regional District of North Okanagan’s Electoral Area Advisory Committee wants the Ministry of Transportation to take action at three separate locations in the Mabel Lake and Grindrod areas.

“There are some safety concerns and they are important to the community,” said director Jackie Pearase.

Among the demands is a reduction in the speed limit on Rivermouth Road at Mabel Lake.

“The speed limit on Mabel Lake Road is 80 kilometres an hour and there are no signs that say the speed changes (on Rivermouth Road),” said Pearase.

Besides year-round residents, the area is popular with tourists accessing the boat launch and other amenities during the summer.

“There’s a concern something will happen because of the congestion,” said Pearase of the threat of accidents.

The EAAC is also asking the ministry to install street lights near Grindrod at Highway 97B and Springbend Road and Highway 97B and Grandview Bench Road.

“It’s very dark there and when you are pulling out on to the highway, it can be a little scary,” said Pearase.

The EAAC is asking the RDNO board to write a letter to the Ministry of Transportation on these matters.
