Staff members at St. Joseph’s General Hospital are getting set to lace up their skates for a fundraising hockey game that supports children and families in the Comox Valley. The St. Joe’s Scrubs will take on the St. Joe’s Saints on April 2 in the third annual Memorial Fundraising Hockey Game at 7 p.m. at Comox Valley Sports Centre Arena 1.Staff members from all departments in the hospital play the game in memory of Alexis Irelyn Pendak, and they raise money for the maternal child care unit at St. Joseph’s and for YANA (You Are Not Alone), which supports local families with children who need medical treatment that is unavailable locally.Pendak was born nine weeks premature on Nov. 20, 2008, weighing only four pounds and two ounces. She was delivered by emergency cesarean after being flown from St. Joseph’s General Hospital. She passed away March 12, 2009.Her grandfather, Glen Robinson, an employee at St. Joseph’s, and his family appreciated the overwhelming support from YANA and the St. Joseph’s staff, particularly the engineering department, and wanted to do something to give back, according to a press release. For the past two years, the Memorial Fundraising Hockey Game has raised money for YANA and maternal child care at St. Joseph’s.Last year, the hockey game raised more than $20,000.To help raise money, a silent auction will be held April 1 in the hospital cafeteria, Sisters Café, and the public is invited to stop in and bid on a large variety of items. There will also be an auction during the hockey game. The event grows every year, and this year, there will be a salmon barbecue supplied by Marine Harvest from 4 to 7 p.m. prior to the hockey game. Food is offered by donation. There will also be entertainment by the Many Waters Band.As well, there will be a fundraising raffle draw. Tickets are available at the YANA office at 495 Fitzgerald Ave. in Courtenay or the St. Joseph’s Hospital Foundation office in the hospital lobby. The first prize is a flight to anywhere WestJet flies, while the second and third prizes are Kona bikes donated by Simon’s Cycles.
