A standoff involving a man who threatened to blow up his house ended peacefully Monday evening with Abbotsford police taking the individual to hospital for mental health treatment.
Around 5:30 p.m., police went to the man’s residence – in the area of Mayfair Avenue and Cottage Lane – to investigate an earlier report that the man had threatened someone.
The 65-year-old man locked himself in the residence, and at one point threatened to use the furnace to blow up the house. Abbotsford Police Const. Ian MacDonald said authorities shut off the gas supply.
Officers made contact with the man, and were communicating with him for several hours. Emergency response team members were at the scene. Traffic on Mayfair was blocked McCallum and Cottage.
Abbotsford Fire Rescue Service and BC Ambulance crews were also present.
Shortly after 10 p.m., nearby residents reported hearing loud bangs coming from the area, but the standoff didn’t end until around 11:45 p.m., police said. The man was taken to hospital, although charges of uttering threats and breaching conditions are possible. No physical injuries were reported.
