The Morning Star was bronzed at the annual Ma Murray B.C. Yukon Community Newspaper Association awards in Richmond.

For the second time in three years, with a second-place finish sandwiched in between, The Morning Star finished third in the Newspaper Excellence Award for the highest circulation category in the province.

“Top-three in the province, against a lot of big, strong papers, is tremendous recognition for the work our entire staff does every week,” said Morning Star publisher Ian Jensen. “To finish in the top three, again, as the best newspaper for our circulation in B.C., is very rewarding.”

Said the judges: “The Morning Star is a clean, easy-to-read, solid community newspaper. Readers are greeted with excellent production quality, and thoughtful news selection and ad placement.

“In addition to its pleasing layout and look, the front page is refreshing in its ability to present a fully realized story without it needing to be continued elsewhere.”

The Morning Star finished with a total of 79.83 points (out of 100) in the judging, one full point behind the second-place winner, Surrey Now, and more than three points ahead of the fourth-place paper, the Vancouver Courier.

“What really set The Morning Star apart is its strong editorial page and feature news stories,” said the judges. “Arts and sports coverage is thorough and wide ranging, and the classifieds section is being incredibly well-used by the community. Fantastic.”

Kamloops This Week topped the division with a score of 85.

The Morning Star recently won a second-place honour for Best Holiday Edition for its circulation category in the Canadian Community Newspaper Association’s annual awards.
