The search for snow is leading thousands of people to Silver Star.
About 5,000 people a day have been converging on the ski resort throughout this week and that trend is expected to continue until New Year’s Day.
“Come up and enjoy the winter wonderland,” said Robin Baycroft, resort services manager.
There is a 113 centimetre snow base, with 22 centimetres of the white stuff falling Tuesday night. There was another three centimetres of fresh snow Wednesday.
“We’re full-on winter,” said Baycroft, adding that all 115 alpine ski runs are expected to be open this week.
Besides alpine and nordic skiing, visitors are enjoying other activities like Tube Town, skating on Brewer’s Pond and sleigh rides.
And while North Okanagan residents are a common sight, they are mingling with guests from around the world, including the U.S., Ontario, Australia and Britain.
“There are people from Brazil to Lumby and every where in between,” said Baycroft.
Staff have been able to cope with the large crowds.
“There are busy days but they’re not unmanageable,” said Baycroft.
“There may be a 10-minute lift line and some people are parking in overflow.”
About 3,000 people are anticipated as the resort celebrates New Year’s Eve Saturday.
The torchlight parade and fireworks get underway at 8 p.m.
“It’s a great family event,” said Baycroft.
As in previous years, resort staff are working with the RCMP to ensure everyone celebrating New Year’s Eve does so safely.
“We don’t tolerate open liquor or rowdiness,” said Baycroft.
