Submitted by David Mclean, leadership teacher–On Dec. 2, 35 George M. Dawson Leadership and Volunteer students organized a 29-plus one hour famine to raise money for the Masset food bank. Some students went door-to-door fundraising, while others convinced their family members they could go without food for more than a day.Collectively, students raised over $2,000 for the food bank’s Christmas kitchen, with Chloe Good taking top spot for funds raised at approx. $500. From 9 am on Dec. 2 to 3 pm on Dec. 3, students willingly went without food; they could only drink water and some juice throughout. Participants spent the first day in regular classes and then held a Friday night sleepover at the school. The students kept their minds off food by occupying themselves with light sports in the gym, Just Dance 3 challenges, Christmas movies and games. Leadership 8/9 and 10/11 would like to thank the Atwells, the Bells, and the HGSCP Girls Group for supplying and preparing food for the students’ and staff’s breakfast at 3 pm. Thanks also to GMD Principal Mr. Cross, Ms Madore, Ms Liston, Ms Ollete, Mr Cagna, Ms Yorke and any other chaperones who attended. Haw’aa to everyone who supported and helped us give a little extra to our community this Christmas.
