Rossland’s population increased by 173 people between 2011 and 2016, according to 2016 census statistics released by Statistics Canada on Wednesday.
Our city’s population rose to 3,729 in 2016, up from 3,556 in 2011, for an increase of 4.9 per cent. In comparison, the Kootenay Boundary average was an increase of 1.0 per cent, the provincial average was an increase of 5.6 per cent and the national average was an increase 5.0 per cent.
Provincially, Rossland was ranked 130 out of 654 census subdivisions (CSD) — an “area that is a municipality or an area that is deemed to be equivalent to a municipality for statistical reporting purposes” — for population. Rossland’s national population rank is 877 out of 4870.
Comparing Rossland to other municipalities in the region, we experienced higher percent population growth than Grand Forks (1.6 per cent) and Trail (0.4 per cent), while most regional municipalitis experienced a decrease in population: Warfield’s population decreased by 1.2 per cent, Montrose’s decreased by 3.3 percent, Midway decreased by 3.7 per cent, Fruitvale’s decreased by 4.5 per cent, and Greenwood’s decreased by 6.1 per cent.
