This summer, the Museum at Campbell River invites you to step aboard the Soyokaze for a guided tour as a part of our new Fun Friday Programs.
This antique cod fishing boat was donated to the Museum at Campbell River by the Matsunaga family in 1999, and received an Outstanding Achievement Award from the Heritage Society of B.C. in 2003.
We are pleased to continue to tell its story through this program. We welcome you to learn about the history of the Soyokaze, from its beginnings in Steveston, B.C. to the unlikely story of how the boat was reunited with its original owner, Mr. Shigekazu Matsunaga, after the Second World War.
In a 2001 article for Pacific Fishing Magazine Alan Haig-Brown remarked, “…this fine craft may well become a “must” stop for fishermen travelling up and down Vancouver Island.”
The program will explain a bit about the construction of the Soyokaze, the cod fishing industry surrounding Cape Mudge, and Japanese-Canadian history in British Columbia.
The tour will be followed by fun activities, which include a game of Fishing for Facts for children and nautical knot tying tutorials for all ages.
The Soyokaze tours take place on July 8 and August 5 at 11 a.m. and at 2 p.m. The program is included with Museum Admission. The Museum at Campbell River is located at 470 Island Highway. For more information please call 250-287-3103 or email summer.programs@crmuseum.ca.
