Steve Fonyo, the amputee who ran across Canada 30 years ago, is in critical but stable condition after being stabbed during a home invasion this morning.
On Friday, Feb. 13 at 5 a.m., three people wearing dark outfits broke down the door of Fonyo’s home in the 11000-block of 136 Street.
Fonyo suffered a stab wound to the back and is being treated in Royal Columbian Hospital.
Police would not confirm that the victim is Fonyo, but The Leader has learned through reliable sources that it is.
The Surrey RCMP did say the stabbing was a targeted incident and that they are currently looking for the three individuals believed to be involved in the attack.
Fonyo, a cancer survivor, was 19 when he completed a 14-month run across Canada, completing a one-legged run of fellow amputee, Terry Fox, who had been forced to abandon the Marathon of Hope four years earlier.
During his run, Fonyo raised $16 million for cancer research.
Two decades later, Fonyo was stripped of his Order of Canada after he amassed several criminal convictions, including assault, forgery, and drunk driving.
He has also struggled with an addiction to cocaine.
Anyone with information about the stabbing incident is asked to call Surrey RCMP at 604-599-0502 or to remain anonymous, call Crime Stoppers at 1-800-222-8477 (TIPS).
