Elders at the Old Massett adult day program got their flat screen TV back this week, less than a week after it was stolen in the middle of the night. Const. Chad Gravelle said Masset RCMP, working with the help of local citizens, found and returned the elders’ television plus another TV and X-box gaming system that had been stolen from an Old Massett resident. Const. Gravelle said the trouble started the night of March 14, when someone broke into the Elders’ Centre and stolen a large flat screen TV. Two days later, someone broke into a house and stole another flat screen TV, along with an X-box and several games. RCMP received several tips from members of the public about suspects trying to sell the stolen items, but none of the people would provide a statement, Const. Gravelle said. RCMP spoke to the suspects, but they denied any involvement and said they knew nothing about where the stolen items were. Then, RCMP received an anonymous complaint that two people were banging on a door in Masset. They were not leaving and looked suspicious. Police attended the location and found two youths in possession of the stolen X-box and the missing games. Another anonymous complaint led to the recovery of the flat screen TV taken from the house along with the X-box. RCMP continued to ask around about the TV that had been stolen from the Elders’ Centre, Const. Gravelle said. A few hours later, an anonymous caller reported that they had been approached by the same two youths and asked if they wanted to buy a large flat screen TV. Masset RCMP were subsequently able to recover the stolen TV and return it to the Elders’ Centre. Const. Gravelle said the RCMP would like to thank all the local citizens who helped in the recovery of the missing items.
