The Abbotsford Police Department is alerting the public about a rash of townhouse break-ins.
Sgt. Judy Bird said the APD’s crime reduction unit investigated 13 such incidents during October and the first part of November. She said this is an increase over the three-year average.
Bird said the break-ins have occurred during the late afternoon or early evening when residents were not at home. She said they initially began on the east side of Abbotsford but have since moved to the west.
She said the culprit(s) got into the homes either through windows or sliding doors which had been left unlocked or which they pried open.
“Primarily money and jewelry were stolen during the break-ins,” Bird said.
She said the APD is reminding residents to:
• close garage doors and windows
• lock any doors in the garage, including those leading into a house
• check that all house doors and windows – front, back, side and garage – are locked
• turn on an exterior light
• turn on alarm systems and CCTV
Anyone with information about the incidents is asked to call the APD crime reduction tip line at 604-864-4744 or, to remain anonymous, contact Crime Stoppers at 1-800-222-8477(TIPS) or Solvecrime.ca.
