Students confess to grad prank

Students from Nanaimo District Secondary School have confessed to a grad prank committed at Dover Bay Secondary School on the weekend.

Students from Nanaimo District Secondary School have confessed to a grad prank committed at Dover Bay Secondary School on the weekend.

The playing field at Dover Bay Secondary School was targeted for a grad prank early Friday when someone cut “NDSS 2011” into the grass. The message cut into the grass was about seven metres long by three metres high.

Witnesses saw several teenagers, some wearing disguises in the field, the night the letters were dug into the lawn.

Const. Gary O’Brien, Nanaimo RCMP spokesman, said eight males and two females were involved in the prank and several have since turned themselves in to police.

The prank resulted from an ongoing feud between students at the two schools. O’Brien said the students wore disguises, used shovels to cut the letters and alcohol was not a factor.

“It was part of an ongoing feud and they got carried away,” O’Brien said. “They’re all extremely remorseful and after the media attention, they turned themselves in.”

No charges are pending and any disciplinary action is being handled by the schools involved.

A more serious prank at NDSS, which required the school to replace most of its exterior door locks after glue was injected into them last weekend, has not been solved.

Anyone with information about that crime is asked to call Nanaimo RCMP at 250-754-2345 or contact Crime Stoppers at 1-800-222-8477 or online a www.nanaimocrimestoppers.com.
