Central Okanagan Public School students got a chance to explore the Great Barrier Reef, virtually.
The students observed more than 5,000 sea creatures in their natural habitats as well as followed a scuba diver around the reef and into a predator tank to observe sharks.
They got to do this all while sitting inside A.S. Matheson Elementary, Feb. 21.
The goal of Virtual Field Trips is to provide students with engaging, innovative, and world-class learning experiences (in any subject) to enhance and supplement their studies.
The virtual trips useCloud-based technology such as ZOOM provides high-quality interaction at a minimal cost, requiring only an internet connection and a webcam.
Small team provides technical support to multiple schools, while teacher-librarians lead learners on specific programs.
The program is in its fifth year. For 2016/17, they are providing 160-200 virtual field trips to schools across the district, with more than 6000 students taking part.
