Ucluelet’s police are asking motorists to slow down for summer’s traffic instead of trying to blow past it.
“Please slow down on the highway,” Const. Marcel Midlane told the Westerly News. “We’ve been to tons of motor vehicle accidents out on the highway within the last month,”
He said collisions are being caused by both locals and visitors and urges those familiar with the highway to stop trying to unsafely pass those who aren’t.
“There’s just too many bad spots and too many people who aren’t familiar with the highway out here which creates an extra hazardous situation because you get people who want to get somewhere fast,” he said.
“They start going around people on double solid lines, going up to blind corners and creating a super unsafe environment for everybody on the road just so they can get three cars ahead and then get stuck behind ten more cars.”
He cautions anyone traveling between Ucluelet and Tofino, or heading to Port Alberni, to leave well ahead of time to avoid being in a hurry while stuck behind an RV.
“I know how frustrating it can be getting stuck behind camper after camper but please leave a little bit sooner for your destination and give yourself that extra time buffer in the summer,” he said.
“It’s frustrating when people aren’t using the pullouts as they should be but, that being said, give yourself an extra half an hour.”
