One of the world’s top 10 sparkling wines was made in Kelowna.

Although most were made in France, Summerhill Pyramid Winery’s Cipes Rose received a gold medal and was named as a top world wine at the Effervescents du Monde, judged in France Nov. 13 to 15.

It was the only North American sparkling wine to place in the international competition.

Aside from the seven French wines, two each came from Italy and Spain. In all, there were 14 wines in the ‘top 10’ with the website explanation “Some wines are rigorously equal, thus the top 10 2013 includes 14 wines.”

More than 600 wines from 28 countries were judged by 100 international judges in Dijon, Burgundy, France and 46 gold medals awarded.

The Cipes Rose is a 100 per cent organic Pinot Noir grown in several vineyards around the valley, all of which are maintained specifically for sparkling wine production.

The rose was made in the traditional Champagne method and is described as having “notes of raspberry, strawberry, kiwi, blood orange, vanilla, almond and white toast.”
