Summerland council holds special meeting on Sept. 6

Numerous items including tax exemptions, tree removal and development reports on agenda

Summerland’s municipal council will hold a special meeting on Sept. 6 to address items that require attention before the next regularly scheduled meeting.

Council normally meets on the second and fourth Mondays of the month, but the meeting that would be scheduled for Sept. 10 has been cancelled since council members will be at the Union of B.C. Municipalities annual convention that week. The annual convention, held Sept. 10 to 14 this year, will be in Whistler.

Items to be discussed at the Sept. 6 municipal council meeting include requests for permissive tax exemptions, the quarterly financial report from the municipality’s director of finance, addressing the unauthorized removal of trees from a preservation area and development services reports.

The permissive tax exemption requests include church properties with excess lands as well as a request from the new Unisus International School.

Postponing these requests to the Sept. 24 council meeting may result in timing difficulties, since the permissive tax exemption bylaw must be passed by Oct. 31.

The quarterly financial report covers the second quarter of this year, which ended on June 30.

Because of workload issues, there was a delay in presenting this financial information to council.

The removal of trees from the Woodbridge Preservation Area was raised at the Aug. 27 council meeting, after protected trees were cut at the site.

The development services reports are being presented at the Sept. 6 meeting in order to address a backlog within the development services department.

Because of staffing changes within the department, there are numerous requests to come forward.

Additional recommendations about cannabis are also expected to come forward at the Sept. 6 meeting.
